General Outline and Routes

Olympic Torch Relay

The Olympic torch is a symbol of peace and hope. The Olympic flame, lit from sunlight in ancient Olympia, Greece, is the most powerful symbol of the Olympics in the countries that hold Olympic games, and is relayed by torch runners. The concept of the Tokyo 2020 torch relay is ‘Hope Lights Our Way’. The torch light, which inspires and encourages people to support and appreciate one another, is the sunlight for the new era, illuminating the road of hopes and dreams ahead of us.
The torch relay begins at the lighting ceremony of the Olympic flame in Greece, and then it will be flown to Japan to be exhibited specially in three of the prefectures affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. After the exhibition, titled ‘Fire of Revival’, the torch relay will commence in Japan, covering all prefectures.
